Hermelinda Urvina: The First Pilot of Ecuador and South America

One of the most inspiring stories was born in Ecuador. Hermelinda Urvina didn’t just dream of flying; she crossed borders to achieve it. She moved to the United States and, in 1932, earned her private pilot license issued by American authorities.

This made her not only the first Ecuadorian woman to become a pilot but the first South American woman to achieve this certification in the U.S. Her boldness led her to become a founding member of the “Ninety-Nines,” the historic international organization of women pilots founded by Amelia Earhart.

The Legacy in Colombia

Colombia also has a rich legacy of pioneer aviatrices. In the mid-20th century, Colombian women began taking the controls, demonstrating exceptional technical skill over the complex geography of the Andes mountains.
